Building a resilient database platform is crucial for any business. At Xero, we strive to automate routine tasks and surface actionable insights that help our customers grow.

Our Data Reliability Engineering team plays a critical role in running the highly scalable and reliable database platform that supports various engineering teams in delivering customer value. The next challenge we're tackling involves migrating off our self-managed cloud database platform onto cloud-managed database offerings. To achieve this goal, we need to build up expertise in PostgreSQL and modernize business-critical workloads into PostgreSQL, safely and at scale.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you'll be part of the Data Reliability Leadership team and play a key role in driving innovation over the database platform through tooling and golden pathways. Your focus will be on creating software that improves how Xero creates and delivers software.

  • Develop high-quality software that aligns with product goals.
  • Guide engineering practices and teams to adopt world-class techniques.
  • Advocate for the adoption of new technology and tooling to support product requirements.
  • Evaluate security and data guidelines to ensure implementation.
  • Create Golden Pathway tooling to simplify complexity and enable Engineering Teams to innovate on top of the database platform.
  • Promote quality standards across Xero and enable teams to build robust, scalable, and secure solutions.
  • Focus on systemic prevention of issues by implementing best practices and tooling that make world-class engineering easy.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring proven experience in tech leading large, complex projects to delivery, ensuring technical excellence and alignment with strategic goals. You should have extensive technical leadership experience on cloud-native platforms, with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and performance. Effective communication skills are also essential to develop compelling messages and present them effectively at the executive level. Additionally, demonstrated ability to mentor and coach engineers on technical challenges and career development is necessary.
