Adelaide, South Australia SAHMRI Full time

Position Overview

Full-Time, 12-Month Engagement

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) is dedicated to pioneering health and medical research that significantly enhances the quality of life for individuals.

The Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA), initiated in 2017, aims to track the health, service utilization, medication consumption, mortality, and other health-related outcomes of individuals receiving aged care services. ROSA's effective framework utilizes existing data, integrating diverse datasets gathered by various organizations nationwide, to present a comprehensive view of the aging process. ROSA generates evidence to inform decision-making for quality, coordinated, efficient, innovative, and age-friendly services and practices.

We are looking for a Senior Epidemiologist specializing in Pharmacoepidemiology to join our team, focusing on research that addresses the health services for the elderly. In this capacity, you will analyze extensive datasets, offer expertise in pharmacoepidemiology for protocol formulation, study design, analytical methodologies, and dissemination of research outcomes. The role requires both independent work and collaboration with the ROSA team, research partners, and stakeholders involved in research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting high-caliber research with an emphasis on pharmacoepidemiology and health services for older adults in aged care, encompassing planning, project oversight, literature review, data analysis, and publication.
  • Analyzing large datasets (over 1 million individuals) within ROSA, including aged care records, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data, Medicare Benefits Schedule data, and hospitalization records.
  • Providing pharmacoepidemiological expertise on protocol formulation, study design, analytical methods, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results along with their implications.
  • Executing and coordinating advanced statistical analyses, including complex multivariable modeling and survival analysis. Familiarity with sophisticated techniques for confounding adjustment and other observational data characteristics is highly desirable.
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and writing project reports promptly.
  • Managing and coordinating the lifecycle of research projects, advising on timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Collaborating with the analytical team on data management, linkage efforts, and quality control processes as necessary for ROSA's implementation and performance enhancement.
  • Assisting in the preparation of ROSA grant applications for competitive funding and project tender submissions in relevant areas when appropriate.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in pharmacoepidemiology, epidemiology, public health, medicine, allied health, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a pharmacoepidemiologist or related role.
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package (e.g., SAS, R, or Stata).
  • Two years of independent experience working with large datasets, preferably in the context of medicines, health services, and/or aged care data.
  • Experience with observational data, multivariable modeling, confounding/interaction issues, survival analysis, and data visualization.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a proven ability to work accurately under competing deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including effective record-keeping and version control abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high-level leadership and support to research projects and multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Requirements

  • Some out-of-hours work may be necessary.
  • DCSI Employment Screening and Police Checks may be required.
