About Warraber Island and the Campus
Located in the heart of the Vigilant Channel, surrounded by warm waters and vibrant coral reefs, lies Warraber Island. The island is home to an abundance of native resources including wongai, coconuts, and other rich traditional foods. The waters teem with fish, turtles, and dugong, creating a thriving ecosystem.
The people of Warraber Island are part of the Kulkalaig group from the Central Islands of the Torres Strait. They have deep cultural ties to the land, where life remains steeped in tradition. Hunting, dancing, and thayilai (feasts) play essential roles in daily life, keeping heritage alive for generations.
The Campus, established in 1985 and integrated into Tagai State College in 2007, serves as a vital educational hub for the community. It provides education to students from Kindergarten to Year 6, with a unique focus on supporting students for whom English is an additional language.
