Job Overview:

The Advanced Warhead Technologies group requires a skilled mechanical tradesperson/precision machinist to support experimental and trials work programs. The successful candidate will provide precision machinist support to the group and other situated in the Explosives Ordnance Precinct.

This role involves making last minute changes or modifications to components or manufacturing necessary hardware during the actual conduct of experimental programs. High-quality work within short timelines is essential.

About the Role:

The Advanced Warhead Technologies group provides a sovereign R&D capability to design, prototype and characterise advanced warheads and energetic materials. This enables transformation of future ADF warfighting capabilities.

As a member of the team, you will have the opportunity to work on novel warhead concepts for advanced weapon systems and emerging disruptive energetic materials technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Determine best manufacturing processes with limited direction
  • Experience with high precision machining, e.g. warhead, fuze and vacuum components
  • Operate NC machine tools with and without Conversational Controllers, e.g. lathes, mills and wire cutters
  • Understanding of, and experience with machine cutting tools
  • Use casting moulds and associated vacuum systems
  • Ability to understand and produce detailed engineering drawings

Typical Components:

  • Transducer and gauge mounts
  • Specialised test stands
  • Casting molds and pressing dies
  • Warhead casings and other associated hardware
  • Bespoke tooling used in assembly/disassembly of munitions

Requirements:

  • WHS awareness and ability to train others on processes/equipment
  • Independent management and maintenance of mechanical fabrication workshops

Our Team:

The Advanced Warhead Technologies group consists of chemists, engineers, physicists and technical specialists conducting R&D focused on novel warhead concepts. We conduct most work in various on-site laboratories and facilities but also testing at ADF test ranges throughout the country.
