These events have significant economic impacts and increase vulnerability. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has taken steps to deliver a customer-focused, integrated, and resilient national operation.

This shift aims to better serve Australian communities.

Our organization comprises Decision Support Services, Environmental Prediction Services, and National Production Services. These services enable scalable, national, and resilient operations.

We operate with a national capability, accountable for engaging with the Australian community and emergency management sector.

Two dedicated teams facilitate this: Hazard Preparedness and Response (HPR) and Community Engagement (CE).

To address these challenges, we need hydrologists who can provide critical decision-making support using complex data analysis and modeling techniques.

The ideal candidate will be skilled in data interpretation, spatial analysis, and predictive modeling.

This role involves analyzing meteorological and hydrological data to inform decision-makers on potential flood risks and other extreme weather events.

You will work closely with our team to develop and maintain models that predict flood likelihood and severity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing meteorological and hydrological data to identify patterns and trends.
  • Developing and maintaining predictive models to forecast flood risks and other extreme weather events.
  • Collaborating with the team to design and implement early warning systems.
  • Contributing to the development of effective communication strategies for stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in hydrology or a related field.
  • Proven experience in data analysis and modeling, particularly in the context of flood risk management.
  • Strong understanding of hydrological processes and their impact on water resources.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
