About the Role

The Chief Building Policy Strategist will lead and manage building related policy areas for the Department of Housing and Public Works and Government.

This role is pivotal in guiding transformational change, driving government's reform agenda and shaping the future direction of the building industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to Building Policy, demonstrating public service values, encouraging continuous improvement, and supporting the vision of becoming the best public sector in Australia.
  • Support the Assistant Director-General, providing strategic advice and leadership on building legislation, codes, policy, and standards.
  • Promote a high-performance workplace culture consistent with departmental values.
  • Maintain effective monitoring and reporting protocols to ensure service delivery and budgetary performance align with Divisional and whole-of-government priorities.
  • Develop innovative strategies and policies that enhance built environment and asset management, aligned with government priorities.
  • Identify operational efficiencies and change management initiatives to optimise service delivery and reduce red tape.
  • Foster strong relationships with key stakeholders to advance policy development and address state-specific concerns.
  • Represent the Department at significant forums to ensure Queensland's interests are addressed.
  • Manage staff performance and development, providing coaching and mentoring to build capability and achieve organisational outcomes.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a degree in a relevant field, such as architecture, engineering or project management. You will also need to have experience in building policy development, legislative drafting and stakeholder engagement.

You will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
