Adelaide, South Australia BDO Full time
About BDO

At BDO, we prioritize genuine flexibility in the workplace. While we encourage our employees to spend some of their time at their local BDO office, our advanced IT systems allow us to support candidates who may also wish to work remotely.

We welcome applications from individuals seeking to work in a more adaptable manner.

As a result of a team member's parental leave, BDO's in-house legal department is looking to hire a seasoned attorney to fill this role on a twelve-month maximum-term contract. We seek a commercial lawyer who can provide practical legal advice and work independently as well as collaboratively within the broader legal team.

Experience a work-life balance that values your time.

Your Contributions

In collaboration with the General Counsel and the legal team, you will leverage your expertise in commercial and corporate law to offer legal and strategic guidance to your colleagues across the organization.

Your role will encompass a variety of engaging and complex issues, with responsibilities including:

  • Drafting and advising on commercial and client contracts (both external and internal).
  • Providing counsel on various legal agreements, including non-disclosure and procurement contracts.
  • Offering ad hoc legal advice throughout the organization.
  • Assisting with legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.
  • Providing guidance on employment law issues.
  • Supporting investigations, disputes, and litigation (including liaising with external counsel as necessary).
  • Enhancing the firm's legal frameworks (reviewing policies and procedures, providing legal training).
  • Contributing to special projects and initiatives across the organization.
  • Developing legal knowledge resources and optimizing workflows within the legal team.

Qualifications for Success

While prior in-house experience is not mandatory, we are looking for candidates who thrive in a supportive environment and can utilize their legal and commercial acumen effectively.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • A Bachelor of Laws and admission to practice in an Australian State or Territory.
  • A minimum of 6 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • Experience in commercial and corporate law.
  • The ability to apply legal skills to deliver practical solutions while balancing legal risks with business objectives.
  • A mindset geared towards innovation and change, with the ability to develop ideas and consult with others to create viable commercial solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective communication and trust-building with colleagues at various levels.
  • Agility and adaptability to manage competing priorities and handle legal matters of varying complexity.
  • Experience in employment law, litigation, and regulatory matters (ASIC) will be highly regarded, though not essential.
