Accountant Position Overview

This is a dynamic role that involves delivering financial control, management accounting, and variance analysis for the Retail Gas Division within Energy Markets.

The Senior Accountant position requires strong stakeholder engagement for budgeting and forecasting, ensuring financial integrity, and providing strategic insights to support business performance.

  • Financial control and project accounting activities for the Retail Gas Business will be delivered in line with established standards and processes.
  • Reporting and review processes will be developed and implemented to improve transparency of business performance, enabling insight and supporting decision making.
  • Balance sheet assurance for completeness and control over the balance sheet, profit and loss, and cash flow will be delivered.
  • Risks that may affect financial information will be identified and plans to mitigate risks will be developed and executed.
  • Annual Budget and monthly forecasting will be prepared which requires extensive stakeholder engagement to prepare detailed operating cost, revenue, discount spend budgets and forecast for the various business units within the retail business.
  • Process improvement initiatives will be explored to enhance current ways of working.
  • Data and analytical skills will be utilised to provide insights to support decision making.
  • Presentations and explanations will be prepared for the Retail extended leadership team.
  • Budget and forecast assumptions will be constructively challenged to ensure that budgets and forecasts are unpinned by reliable assumptions.
  • Risks of not achieving the budgets and forecasts will be identified and sensitivity analyses and scenarios will be run for the management to understand the impact of potential downside risks and potential improvement opportunities.
  • Financial reporting will be provided to management and stakeholders, and advice will be given on how the company and future business decisions might be impacted.
  • Financial reporting will be delivered within established timeframes & measurements of quality.
  • Operational analysis and recommendations will be provided.
  • Monthly results at EBIT, Balance Sheet and Cash levels will be managed and presented to business leaders.
  • Potential scenarios and outcomes including develop or recommend solutions for problems or situations will be presented.
Key Responsibilities

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for:

  • Delivery of financial control and project accounting activities.
  • Development and implementation of reporting and review processes.
  • Delivery of balance sheet assurance.
  • Identification and mitigation of financial risks.
  • Preparation of Annual Budget and monthly forecasting.
  • Exploration of process improvement initiatives.
  • Utilisation of data and analytical skills to provide insights.
  • Preparation of presentations and explanations.
  • Constructive challenge of budget and forecast assumptions.
  • Identification of risks of not achieving budgets and forecasts.
  • Provision of financial reporting and advice.
  • Delivery of financial reporting within established timeframes & measurements of quality.
  • Provision of operational analysis and recommendations.
  • Management of monthly results at EBIT, Balance Sheet and Cash levels.
  • Presentation of potential scenarios and outcomes.
