Job Title: Principal Research Fellow

The Ngangk Yira Institute for Change is seeking a highly experienced and qualified individual to take on the role of Principal Research Fellow. This position is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop research focused on the priorities facing Aboriginal men and fathers.

The successful applicant will provide critical gender-specific leadership, working closely with stakeholders and Aboriginal communities in Western Australia to develop co-designed, transformative research that privileges Aboriginal knowledge and world views.

This role requires strong leadership skills, experience in quantitative or qualitative research management, and a track record of success in obtaining and managing competitive research funding.

The successful candidate will also have a PhD/Doctorate/MPhil in a relevant field, such as health, population health, education, or social equity, and demonstrated leadership in population health or educational policy and research for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of new priorities in strategic research for men's health, social and emotional wellbeing and its translation to policy and practice.
  • Engage with Elders, Aboriginal community members, and key external stakeholders to undertake co-design that underpins the principles of Ngangk Yira's research methodologies.
  • Collaborate with Centre Directors and senior researchers across the three research and advocacy centres of the Ngangk Yira institute for Change on collaborative research aligned with issues affecting men's health, social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Provide leadership for project milestones, research protocols, and dissemination of outcomes to meet research objectives, timeframes, community engagement and legislative requirements.
  • Build and maintain new and existing partnerships, collaborations, and networks external to the University to enhance research and advocacy of Aboriginal men's health and promote the translation of research outputs to policy and practice.
  • Make significant contributions to the Yorga, Maaman Koolanga Research and Advocacy Centre's publications and impact profile by producing high quality publications.
  • Take a Principal supervisory role for HDR (PhD/Masters/Honours) research students and mentor early and mid-career researchers.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • PhD/Doctorate/MPhil in a relevant field such as health, population health, education, or social equity.
  • Demonstrated leadership in population health or educational policy and research for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Experience in quantitative or qualitative research management.
  • Track record of success in obtaining and successfully managing competitive research funding.
  • Success in producing high quality independent research outputs that have national impact and influence.
  • Record of successful HDR supervision.
  • Links with relevant professional or industry groups and external stakeholders to advance the academic and research interests of the Ngangk Yira Institute for Change and Murdoch University.
