PhD Researcher in Process Metallurgy

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD researcher to join our team at Swinburne University of Technology in collaboration with CSIRO. The successful candidate will work on a PhD project focused on process metallurgy, with a specific emphasis on the smelting of blackmass for the recovery of critical metals.
About the ProjectThe project aims to investigate the smelting behaviour of blackmass, a complex material formed during the recycling of various battery types. The research will focus on developing a high-temperature recycling process to recover valuable elements like lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, iron, aluminium, and phosphorus. The project will involve both experimental and modelling studies, with a focus on understanding the reaction mechanism and kinetics of the process.
About YouTo be successful in this role, you will have a Bachelor of Engineering (4 years); Bachelor of Applied Science (4 years); or Masters degree in a relevant field, such as Process/Extractive Metallurgy, Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. You will also have a strong background in materials science and a good understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics. Proficient interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work within a diverse team, are essential.
What We OfferWe offer a competitive stipend of $35,000 p.a. for 3 years with a possible 6-month scholarship extension. You will also have the opportunity to work with a talented team of researchers and industry partners, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for the recycling of critical metals.
