
Carriage Builder and Shopfitting Professional

As a Carriage Builder and Shopfitting Apprentice, you will join our rolling stock maintenance team and develop hands-on skills in one of Australia's most iconic rail environments.
This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced tradespeople while contributing to the safety, reliability, and presentation of our premium train fleet. You will be trained across a wide range of carriage maintenance tasks, focusing on both interior and exterior components.
You will assist in sealing and weatherproofing carriage exteriors, support continuous improvement and refurbishment projects, and use hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery safely and effectively.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect, repair, and install carriage interior components:
- Furniture, wall coverings, flooring, windows, interior & exterior doors, cabinets, bunk beds, and upholstery.
- Perform Preventative Maintenance activities:
- Routine inspections, fault reporting processes, troubleshooting, and repair tasks.
- Maintenance of carriage bodies:
- Side service flaps, access hatches, and carriage bodies.
- Service hinges, locks, and other internal fittings:
- Ensure carriage serviceability standards are maintained.
- Assist in sealing and weatherproofing carriage exterior:
- Support continuous improvement and refurbishment projects.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery:
- Safely and effectively maintain tools and equipment according to 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Ensure adequate stock for all car builder-related spares:
- Available for quick replacement during breakdowns.
- Follow safety, environmental, and rail compliance protocols:
- At all times.
Under supervision and guided training of experienced carriage builders, you will learn to perform the responsibilities listed above as part of your apprenticeship.
This role is suitable for individuals pursuing a Certificate III in Shopfitting and seeking hands-on experience in rail carriage maintenance.
