About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate or Research Fellow to join our team at the University of South Australia's Centre for Cancer Biology. The successful candidate will contribute to grant-funded research for the project "The missing heritability of human disease: discovery to implementation (The RD Collective)".

As a Research Associate (Level ARAS), you will work under the direction of the Head of the Laboratory to achieve defined objectives and test stated hypotheses. You will design and perform a range of experiments, including appropriate controls, to achieve planned research outcomes.

As a Research Fellow (Level BRF), you will conduct high-quality research project independently or under limited supervision and in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders. You will design, perform, and record experimental work, and communicate research outcomes in both verbal and written form.

The RD Collective project applies a coordinated multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary approach to transform the rare disease genetics space by providing improved diagnostic pipelines using new technologies and cutting-edge bioinformatic approaches.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake research under limited supervision to achieve project grant outcomes
  • Design and perform a range of experiments, including appropriate controls
  • Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
  • Undertake administrative duties associated with relevant research projects
  • Conduct high-quality research project independently or under limited supervision and in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders
  • Design, perform, and record experimental work
  • Communicate research outcomes in both verbal and written form
  • Ensure delivery of project's research milestones, objectives, and work programs are met on time, within budget, and to the industry partner's satisfaction
Requirements
  • Bachelor and postgraduate qualification in genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or statistics and/or cell and molecular biology and/or developmental biology and/or biochemistry and/or immunology related disciplines
  • Experience with undertaking next generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, variant interpretation, variant classifications, and variant reporting
  • High level understanding in interpreting biological relevance of clinical and genomic data
  • Experience, as judged by grants and publications, in relevant areas of research and a substantial knowledge of laboratory procedures relevant to the research project/s
  • PhD in genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or statistics and/or cell and molecular biology and/or developmental biology and/or biochemistry and/or immunology related disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience in recording, analysing, presenting, and disseminating research to stakeholders
  • Experience with the interrogation of large bioinformatics databases, including analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data
  • Experience with undertaking whole exome/genome analyses, variant interpretation, variant classification, and variant reporting
