About the Role

The Australian Government Department of Defence is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Assurance and Risk Management to lead our team in providing timely and accurate advice to senior leaders, intervening before risks or issues occur, and reporting on ANAO and Defence Integrity findings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide on-demand advice on risk, assurance audit, and performance management, supporting the Department with risk, audit, and assurance activities.
  • Establish an active assurance and internal audit system, coordinating risk and audit assurance activities for the Department.
  • Enhance the management of risk within the Department to actively manage operational and enterprise-level risks aligned with Defence priorities.
  • Formulate repeatable and reportable performance measures to ensure the Department achieves required outcomes outlined in the Department's Business Plan and under the Chief Information Officer's Strategic Accountabilities and Responsibilities.
  • Conduct internal reviews to provide a performance view of all Department operations, including project and program performance.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an EL 2 DDG Director who exercises independence, has demonstrated excellent leadership skills within a diverse and integrated workforce of capability-focused professionals, and is responsible for achieving complex risk, audit, and assurance deliverables.

  • Excellent understanding of Australia's strategic policy.
  • Extensive work experience with risk, audit, and assurance.
  • Understanding of the requirements of risk, audit, and assurance within the public sector (including working with ANAO findings).
  • Exceptional leadership qualities and capabilities to lead a team to achieve outcomes.
  • Outstanding communication, planning, and relationship-building skills to work across all stakeholder levels.
  • Experience providing guidance to senior-level officials.
  • Proven experience of being a trusted advisor to senior Government officials.
