Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Civil Engineer Trainee to join our team at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). As a Civil Engineer Trainee, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects related to transportation infrastructure, including highway and bridge design, construction, and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using computer-aided design (CADD) software.
  • Conduct bridge inspections, structural evaluations, and load ratings.
  • Prepare project reports, including scoping reports, design reports, and drainage reports.
  • Develop notes and specifications for specialty work.
  • Function as Chief Inspector or Engineer-in-Charge on Department construction projects.
  • Ensure work performed by Contractors meets contract specifications and engineering standards and are performed safely.
  • Review Consultant and Contractor plans and estimates.
  • Initiate design changes and orders-on-contract, complete daily work reports, and prepare final documents and record plans.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
  • One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
