Job Description

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer - Traction Power, you'll play a key role in delivering national projects within the Rail Traction Power sector.

You'll work closely with our State and Discipline Leads, taking a primary leadership role and mentoring upcoming Engineers. Your goal will be to assist the growth of the team while delivering quality assurance on significant national projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review complex reports, proposals, and presentations for clients in the following areas:
    • AC and DC traction substation system design, including single line diagrams, layouts, circuit diagrams, earthing and bonding schematics, and coordination with communication, civil, structural, and mechanical design disciplines
    • AC and DC traction power system studies, including equipment sizing, fault calculations, and insulation coordination studies
    • Coordination of the traction power system with overhead wiring and signalling system design
    • Lightning protection system design
    • Earthing system analysis and design, including pipeline LFI studies
    • Earthing, bonding, and electrolysis assessment and design
    • AC and DC traction protection systems analysis, setting, specification, and design
  • Manage the delivery of specialized components of projects, advising on the most effective team to achieve this
  • Govern technical reviews and quality assurance activities for projects, documentation, processes, and practices
  • Use technical knowledge to identify and realize new client opportunities and provide technical input into the bidding process
  • Lead the technical development of staff, coaching, and mentoring on technical issues
  • Provide technical expertise and overview to clients and stakeholders, assisting them through technical decision-making and providing alternative options/solutions if there are changes to project parameters

Requirements:

  • 15+ years' experience as a power systems engineer, with at least 5 years recent experience in traction power system design or equivalent
  • Tertiary qualification in electrical/power engineering, preferably chartered engineering and RPEQ status
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including a working knowledge of MS Office
  • Highly regarded skills include:
    • Experience in a design consultancy role
    • Demonstrated ability to lead design teams and deliver traction design packages
    • Experience working with traction power system modeling software tools
    • Ability to develop complex earthing and induction models in CDEGS earthing system software
    • Ability to develop traction power system models in ETAP or equivalent software tool
    • Ability to develop transient studies in ATP/PSCAD/EMTP
    • Ability to develop EMC management plans and manage the EMC management procedure
    • Ability to develop maintenance strategies and procedures, commissioning plans, and documentation
