Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Design Manager to work as part of our Secondary Systems Design Team within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) sector. This role demands a leader with deep design expertise, a passion for innovation, and strong management capabilities to drive excellence across complex infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Strategy & Leadership:
    • Develop and implement winning design strategies to secure top-tier design teams from the pursuit stage.
    • Manage all design-related aspects throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring safety, quality, budgetary, and timeframe objectives are met.
  • Design Process Management:
    • Oversee the design consultants' contracts and manage the entire design process, ensuring all documentation and designs meet project requirements.
    • Prepare and monitor budget forecasts, reporting on costs and progress at each project stage.
  • Innovation & Collaboration:
    • Foster innovation and optimization by encouraging interaction between design and construction teams, both locally and with HQ in Spain.
    • Lead value engineering, constructability workshops, and design package reviews to maximize project success.
  • Client & Stakeholder Management:
    • Manage client and stakeholder expectations, attending meetings and workshops as required.
    • Represent our company's technical excellence externally through papers, conferences, and award submissions.
  • Team Development & Leadership:
    • Mentor and develop junior members of the Design Management Team (DMT), helping them reach their full potential.
    • Promote a safety culture and uphold our company's values and behaviours, leading by example.
  • Technical Excellence:
    • Monitor industry developments and implement innovative solutions in coordination with HQ in Spain.
    • Contribute to internal initiatives, such as BIM and sustainability, to enhance our company's competitiveness and profitability.

Requirements:

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of design management, processes, and tools, particularly in multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, construction methods, and relevant standards and regulations.
  • Proficiency with design software, ProjectWise or equivalent, and Team Binder or equivalent; BIM knowledge is an advantage.
  • Excellent project and contract management skills with commercial acumen.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work autonomously and within a team.
  • Analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years in the design and construction of infrastructure projects.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a designer in disciplines such as substation, power or renewables.
  • Proven track record of managing teams and delivering multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects on time and within budget.
