About Our Software Engineering Role

We are seeking a skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our engineering community.

This role involves designing and developing scalable backend services using modern frameworks and tools, collaborating with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to deliver end-to-end experiences, and driving the development of impactful product features.

  • Design and develop reliable backend services that meet the needs of millions of users worldwide.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to scope, define, and deliver impactful product features that have real user impact.
  • Evaluate and improve Canva's backend architecture through thoughtful service design, system decomposition, and shared tooling.
  • Advocate for reliability, performance, and engineering best practices across multiple service domains.
  • Write robust, well-tested code and proactively identify areas for technical improvement or refactor.
Requirements
  • You have extensive experience building complex backend systems in production environments.
  • You possess strong Java fundamentals and can write production-grade code, applying backend concepts like multithreading, service design, and performance optimization in real-world systems.
  • You are comfortable taking ownership of features end-to-end from architecture to delivery and thrive in environments where you drive the 'how'.
  • You balance attention to detail with pragmatism, consistently shipping reliable, maintainable code at speed.
