Job Title: Counsellor Advocate

The role of a counsellor advocate involves working with clients who have experienced trauma and torture, providing expert assessment and counselling using a range of developmentally appropriate psychosocial therapeutic interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to develop clear formulations and client-centred therapeutic goals.
  • Provide trauma-informed and trauma-focused counselling using evidence-based modalities.
  • Offer psychoeducation in individual, family and group settings.
  • Identify critical issues affecting wellbeing, mental health and safety, and develop strategies for responding to these issues.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work or counselling.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in counselling, preferably in a similar context or area of service provision.
  • Experience conducting psychosocial assessments and risk assessments of adults and families.
  • Ability to write high-quality professional reports.
  • Understanding of how to negotiate and advocate with multiple service systems to support client needs.
