Health and Safety Specialist Role

About the Position:

  • Deliver expert advice on preventing accidents, identifying hazards, and implementing control measures.
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Conduct proactive risk assessments and inspections, providing tailored training programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality, tact, reliability, and sensitivity when interacting with students and staff.
  • Support the Return to Work Coordinator in all tasks and processes related to workplace health and safety.

The ideal candidate will possess prior experience and relevant skills outlined in the role description. As a Health and Safety Specialist, you will report directly to the school Principal.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance to management on accident prevention, hazard identification, health promotion, environmental issues, and risk management related to students, staff, and contractors.
  • Develop and coordinate comprehensive training programs on various health and safety topics to enhance awareness and compliance with legislative and departmental requirements.
  • Foster effective communication links with the Workplace Health and Safety Committee by providing regular reports and feedback on activities, including accident prevention, health promotion, risk management, emergency procedures, and updates on relevant legislation and policies.
  • Conduct thorough inspections at schools/colleges to ensure safe work practices and environments are maintained, evaluate the use of safety equipment and chemicals, and develop and implement emergency procedures for all areas of the schools/colleges.
  • Compile data related to workplace health and safety for internal school reviews.
  • Assist the Return to Work Coordinator with administrative tasks and procedures.
  • Design and implement procedures and processes for workplace health and safety, including risk assessments, to ensure ongoing compliance with the schools/colleges' health and safety program.
  • Investigate, manage, and report on serious work injuries, work-caused illnesses, and hazardous events that occur at the school.
