Sydney, New South Wales, Australia beBeeInnovator Full time $120,000 - $170,000

Be part of a technological transformation journey in digital insurance.

We are embarking on a significant endeavour to become Australia's leading Digital Insurer. Our Technology team plays a pivotal role, focusing on strengthening foundations, building for the future, and enabling innovation.

We're seeking an experienced engineer to lead our digital transformation across Australia and New Zealand. As a key member of our CIO Team, you'll champion innovation, shape technical direction, and influence a culture of engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in designing and refactoring legacy Java 8 components towards modern service architectures (e.g., Spring Boot microservices).
  • Migrate GWT-based logic into more modern, maintainable structures (e.g., API-first/backend-for-frontend patterns).
  • Identify and decouple monolithic dependencies across different business areas.
  • Collaborate with architecture and DevOps teams to define scalable deployment strategies.
  • Work on CI/CD pipelines using Bamboo and contribute towards transitioning to modern tooling.
  • Implement engineering best practices, including testing, observability, and secure coding.
  • Mentor other engineers and advocate for continuous improvement.
  • Embed observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and resilience into new services.
  • Drive clean coding standards, automated testing, and security best practices.

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Multiple years of Java development experience, particularly in modernization/refactoring contexts.
  • A deep understanding of legacy Java enterprise environments (WebSphere, GWT, JSP).
  • A proven track record in modularizing and decoupling large codebases.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices; prior experience with Bamboo or similar tools.
  • An understanding of cloud architectures and containerization principles.
  • Experience migrating from on-premises to cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Experience in event-driven architectures (Kafka, SNS/SQS).
  • Exposure to frontend modernization or API gateway integration.
  • Familiarity with GWT/GXT is beneficial (for context in refactoring).
  • Knowledge of domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture, or strangler patterns.
  • Understanding of container security, observability, and platform SRE practices.

Join us in creating a dynamic work environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunities. We provide award-winning training programs, flexible working arrangements, and a comprehensive benefits package.
