Research Scientist Opportunity

We invite applications for a Research Associate position to contribute to an interdisciplinary research project using modern and ancient DNA analysis, funded by the Australian Research Council.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will conduct innovative research on constructing and analysing a DNA reference database for native flora on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. They will also analyse ancient DNA from sediments to develop novel records of vegetation change over the last 10,000 years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive DNA reference database for native flora species.
  • Analyse ancient DNA samples from sediment cores to reconstruct past vegetation patterns.
  • Contribute to fieldwork and laboratory analyses, including sediment processing and DNA extraction.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, applicants should have a strong background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. They should also possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Desirable Characteristics:

  • Experience with bioinformatic tools and software packages, such as NCBI BLAST or Genbank.
  • Knowledge of Quaternary geology and paleoecological principles.
  • Familiarity with R or Python programming languages.
