About the Role

We are seeking highly skilled individuals to join our team as Cryptologic Technicians, providing critical communications support in a war fighting capacity. As a key member of our team, you will be vital to the ship's intelligence gathering operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate highly sensitive and cutting-edge communications equipment to detect, intercept, collect, identify, analyze, and exploit electronic emissions in defense of the ship.
  • Present information to the ship's officers to support decision-making in threat environments.
  • Complete demanding training in technical analysis and equipment usage.
  • Maintain strict security requirements and present information clearly and concisely to command.
Job On Base

When not deployed, Cryptologic Technicians will be based in the Wellington area at the Defence Headquarters or Joint Forces Headquarters. Positions also exist for two-year exchanges based in Canberra, Australia.

Job On Deployment

Cryptologic Technicians at sea primarily work in Defence Watches, consisting of a 7 x 5 routine. In addition to primary duties, sailors on board HMNZ Ships are required to perform general tasks to assist with ship functioning.

Career Progression and Training

As a Cryptologic Technician, you will complete basic and specialist training, posting to a ship or shore establishment to consolidate skills and work towards promotion. You will attend professional advancement courses to increase your skill base.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years old upon completion of recruit course.
  • Have been a NZ Citizen for a minimum of 10 years.
  • Meet citizenship and security requirements for TSV security clearance.
  • Pass a full Psychological Assessment.
  • Complete a 10-year background history check.
