About the Role

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the position of Assistant Director - Animal Health Policy and Programs. This role will play a critical part in leading and supporting the development and implementation of policies and programs related to animal health, particularly in the areas of diagnostic laboratory operations and disease preparedness and response.

Key Responsibilities
  • Policy Development and Implementation: Lead the development and implementation of policies and programs to strengthen national animal health surveillance and laboratory systems and networks.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis to provide advice on management strategies and improvements to national regulatory and policy frameworks.
  • Project Management: Develop and manage projects within the department and/or through collaboration with external stakeholders and providers, including procurement and grant management.
  • Representation and Engagement: Represent the department on various committees and forums to engage with governments, industries, and/or other stakeholders and address national animal biosecurity agenda.
  • International Policy and Standards: Provide input into the development or review of international policy and technical standards for trade in animals and their products as required.
  • Communication and Reporting: Prepare briefings, correspondence, reports, and media releases as required.
  • Staff Supervision and Secretariat Support: Supervise staff and manage secretariat support to relevant national committees and working groups.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Australia's Animal Health Systems: Sound knowledge of Australia's animal health systems.
  • Experience in Diagnostics and Biosecurity: Working knowledge or experience in diagnostics, laboratory disease investigation, biosecurity risk assessment, and/or emergency disease preparedness and response.
  • Policy and Program Development: Practical knowledge or experience in developing and implementing policies, programs, and/or projects for strategic biosecurity objectives.
  • Science Program Management: Sound knowledge or experience in managing and delivering science programs and projects.
