Civil Structural Designer

Job Summary:

This position involves collaborating with others to plan, develop, coordinate, and review project civil / structural design work. In this role, you will work in a 3D modeling environment, produce drawings, facilitate discussions, communicate complex technical issues, and prepare civil / structural design estimates and work plans. Your recommendations will ensure designs and work plans are in accordance with project scope, schedule, regulations, and standards.

As part of the team, you will assist in planning, developing, coordinating, and reviewing project civil / structural design work. You will be responsible for working in a 3D modeling environment, producing drawings, facilitating discussions, communicating complex technical issues, and preparing civil / structural design estimates and work plans.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of civil / structural engineering principles and practices, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with 3D modeling software and drafting techniques is also highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

- Plan, develop, coordinate, and review design work within a small-size civil / structural design work group on projects of medium size or assignments in support of global business unit.
- Produce 3D models, drawings, and documentation in accordance with established design and scope including design of concrete structures, foundations, and steel detailing.
- Coordinate and interface as directed with the day-to-day technical work of civil / structural engineers, scientists, specialists, designers, and drafters.
- Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to upper management.
- Prepare or oversee the preparation of civil / structural design estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manage implementation and performance accordingly.
- Coordinate with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work.
- Review key civil / structural engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries.
- Mentor civil / structural designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
- Ensure civil / structural systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.

Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10 - 13 years of relevant experience.
- Or 14 - 17 years of relevant work experience.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

- Design of a wide range of industrial structures including buildings (covered, opened), material handling structures, equipment supporting structures, building and equipment foundations, retaining walls, etc.
- Design and modeling of concrete and structural steel in 3D environment (e.g. Tekla, Smart3D).
- Assisting in preparation of discipline material take-offs.
- Work in 2D environment while preparing drawings (e.g. Microstation).
- Leading a small structural design team.
- Interaction with broader project team including interfaces with other disciplines.
