Job Overview

A state government department seeks a highly skilled Dam Safety Specialist to join the Earth Resources Regulator & Technical Services team.

The primary goal is to ensure the safety, functionality, and sustainability of tailings and slimes dams throughout their lifecycle within the resources industry.

This role may involve reviewing initial designs and construction to providing ongoing regulatory oversight of monitoring, maintenance, and risk management.

Advising on emerging issues related to tailings and slimes dams that impact communities, infrastructure, and the environment is crucial.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop guidelines for the industry on tailings and slimes dams aligned with industry standards like ANCOLD.
  • Collaborate with the Compliance Team on audits and inspections requiring travel to remote mine sites throughout Victoria.
  • Review work plans and variations for slimes / tailings dams, requiring knowledge of ANCOLD TSF guidelines (2019) and qualitative risk assessment processes.
  • Work with various stakeholders, including industry and technical consultants, demonstrating technical assertiveness and professionalism.
  • Identify high or extreme failure consequence category tailings dams and oversee review by third-party specialists.
  • Develop recovery strategies for catastrophic failure events.
Requirements:
  • You are a professional engineer with relevant experience in dam design, construction, and maintenance.
  • You are recognized by the engineering profession as competent in these areas and eligible for membership with a body like Engineers Australia.
  • You have a sound understanding of risk assessment processes applying to mine and quarry stability, audits, inspections, and incident management.
  • You possess strong analytical, strategic thinking, and project management skills.
  • You have developed interpersonal skills for effective communication and negotiation with industry, government, and the community.
  • You can plan and manage multiple technical requests with competing deadlines.
  • You hold a valid Victorian Driver's Licence and can travel within Victoria.
