Aboriginal Cultural Mentor Job

The Aboriginal Cultural Mentor will work with staff, children, and families to provide culturally appropriate support.

  • Sustain identity, belonging to family, community, and culture for children and young people.
  • Collaborate with families, children, and carers to develop a cultural plan that meets individual needs and supports its implementation.
  • Identify extended family connections and facilitate re-engagement with local communities.
  • Provide mentoring to connect children and young people with family, culture, and community.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Support the well-being of children and young people from an Aboriginal background.
  2. Work closely with families and carers to develop culturally sensitive care plans.
  3. Liaise with Indigenous services and government departments to ensure effective collaboration.
  4. Act as a liaison between staff, families, and communities to promote understanding and respect.
  5. Promote the importance of maintaining strong family and community ties for children's social and emotional development.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of youth work and experience in working with Aboriginal communities.
  • A current Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
  • First Aid Certificate and ability to follow protocols for supporting young people.
  • Experience in developing and implementing individualized programs for young people.
  • Understanding of Needs Based Restorative Framework concepts and recognition by local Indigenous groups.
