Job Description

The Commonwealth Grants Commission (CGC) plays a pivotal role in advising the Australian Government on GST revenue distribution among states and territories. As the Secretary, you will be instrumental in shaping fiscal equalisation policies that benefit all Australians.

As the head of the CGC, you will lead a multidisciplinary team and undertake duties as the organisation's Chief Executive. Key responsibilities include:

  • Informing government decisions through expert advice and recommendations;
  • Effectively managing high-level stakeholder relationships with states and territories to enhance cooperation;
  • Communicating complex information on systems such as Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation and GST distribution;
  • Resolving methodological and data issues with governments in Australia;
  • Evaluating and reporting on strategic, financial, and operational issues, identifying critical risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will require:

  • Highly developed leadership, analytical, and communication skills;
  • Sound judgement and ability to develop productive relationships with stakeholders;
  • Experience in providing advice to ministers on financial, economic, or public policy issues;
  • Public administration and/or regulatory experience;
  • Leadership skills, including effective team management;
  • Tertiary qualifications in economics or a similar field, or equivalent work experience;
