About the Team
The Programs and Visitor Experience team is part of the Programs and Operations section. TheSection includes three teams: Programs & Visitor Experience, Learning and Technical &Production. The Section's key objectives are to increase NFSA's relevance, reach and revenue,particularly through experiences at our headquarters in Acton.
At Acton, we tell the Australian Story through a suite of place-based experiences that activateand celebrate our spaces, surfaces, and collection with programs that inspire, connect, andengage with audio visual culture, media technology, creativity, and the arts. As a local creativeand cultural hub, Acton is a place where all Australians can feel safe, feel seen, and be heard - aplace to explore their identity and engage in conversation.
The Programs and Visitor Experience team is responsible for the delivery and maintenance ofon-site public programs and experiences at Acton, including:
- Baseline Experiences – Our 'always on' experience welcomes visitors to our revitalisedheritage spaces and courtyard with digital and object-based displays.
- Gallery Series – A program of audiovisual art installations by renowned Australian artistsin our main gallery space.
- Film Series – A year-round program of screenings in our award-winning, heritage-listedArc Cinema, including partnerships with independent film festivals.
- Partnerships Series- The team collaborates with external strategic partners to deliverjoint programs and events such as festivals and symposia. Through these partnerships,NFSA builds community and participates as a key voice in the conversation aboutidentity, city renewal, placemaking and design.
- Live@NFSA – The team supports delivery of live events and public programs onsite.
- Commercial Venue Hire – Many of our revitalised spaces are available for hire and moreare coming online. The NFSA recognises venue hire as an opportunity to connect withdiverse audiences, develop business tourism and generate revenue.
Additionally, the team collaborates with teams across the NFSA to deliver internal corporateactivities, conferences and events and provides technical support to Learning programs.
The Opportunity
The Film Projection & Event AV Operator plays a key role in successfully delivering NFSA'sPublic Programming and Venue Hire events in the state-of-the-art archival Cinema (ArcCinema). This position requires demonstrated cinema projection/exhibition knowledge andskills in both analogue and digital formats plus a clear commitment to professional screeningstandards and presentation. Practical experience utilising video and/or digital projectionfacilities will also be of benefit. The role is required to identify accurate screening aspect ratios and sound formats forhistorical, as well as contemporary moving image formats. Further to screenings in Arc, the role provides technical assistance and setups for a wide range of events and venue hire.
Please note: This recruitment process is intended to fill both current and future vacancies. While the position on offer is casual a merit pool of suitable applicants may be established to fill similar positions within the next 18-months.
Job Description
Under general direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:
- Prepare and exhibit motion picture film, video and other moving image carriers within the NFSA's professional archival cinema.
- Quality check 35mm and 16mm films, complete preservation winds for storage andcreate and record condition reports.
- Complete transit winds and packaging for films to be returned to outside agencies.
- Setup and operate audiovisual equipment for a wide variety of events across multiplevenue spaces.
- Liaise with NFSA colleagues, venue hire clients and other stakeholders during eventdelivery.
- Assist with administrative duties and audiovisual editing tasks as required by Programs& Visitor Experience team
- Maintain organisation and security of projection booths and equipment storage areas.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will demonstrate their capacity against the following:
- Demonstrated professional cinema projection/exhibition skills, including knowledge offilm projection technologies and the ability to identify correct aspect ratios and soundformats.
- Experience with audiovisual equipment and capability to operate audio, lighting, andvideo/projection systems for a wide range of events.
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise withvarious stakeholders.
- Ability to work individually and in a team environment in a highly collaborative mannerwhilst maintaining a strong client focus.
- Good understanding of Workplace Health and Safety practices and principles, and howthey relate to the handling of archival film and audiovisual equipment and material.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Relevant experience in film 35mm and 16mm film print handling and projection.
Note:
This role requires working outside of standard working hours, including on weekends.
