Job Overview:
The TWU is expanding our team during an exciting time for the union, and looking for a communications all-rounder and digital campaigner, or potentially a hybrid of these roles depending on applicants.
The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is one of Australia’s leading campaigning trade unions, holding some of the biggest companies in the world to account over their treatment of workers, such as Qantas, Amazon and the supermarket giants.
This is a pivotal moment to join the TWU’s award-winning communications team off the back of landmark legal victories against Qantas and Uber, and new laws we’re using to reform gig transport, aviation and trucking.
We have a hugely ambitious and exciting work program ahead we are looking to expand our national team and increase our capacity to fight industry changing campaigns.

The TWU is looking for staff within the following areas to join the team:
- Communications officer
Main Responsibilities:
- Work with colleagues to create and execute communications plans to support campaigns, collective bargaining and recruitment
- Collaborate with communications colleagues around the country to deliver the national communications strategy
- Develop member-led communications materials, videos and photos to educate workers and advance our campaigns
- Create member-driven content through attendance at site visits, meetings, training and events
- Provide support for media through liaising with journalists and TWU spokespeople
- Create content for other purposes including political lobbying, public information and media background
- Propose innovative approaches to reach members digitally to support on-the-ground organising
- Enhance the TWU’s digital presence through website content and direct communications with members
Strategic thinking
- Utilise analytics tools to regularly monitor and evaluate communications
- Put forward innovative ideas that leverage comms and digital trends
- Collaborate with national communications staff, other TWU officials, delegates and members, and incorporate feedback into content creation processes
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Experience working to communications strategies
- Experience working with media
- A good eye for design (experience with Canva preferred)
- Creativity and attention to detail
- An interest in human rights
- A self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Proactive & enthusiastic in approach to work
- A strong commitment to labour values
- A positive work ethic
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Qualifications in communications, media, campaigns or similar field
- Skills in digital ad management (across Meta, Google and other channels) will be highly regarded
