About the role:
As a Senior Building Surveyor, you’ll play a key role in guiding our Building Team to deliver reliable, efficient, and compliant building surveying services under the Building Act, Building Regulations, and related legislation.
You’ll provide expert regulatory and technical advice to Council, ratepayers, applicants, and other stakeholders, while supporting the Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor in maintaining strong customer relationships and high service standards. This leadership role involves mentoring staff, managing operational delivery, and fostering continuous improvement across the Building Services team.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver building surveying services that are responsive, compliant, and customer-focused
- Assess and issue building permits, conduct mandatory inspections, and issue occupancy permits or certificates of final inspection
- Inspect illegal building works and assist with the administration of building notices and orders in accordance with the Building Act
- Provide specialist advice to staff, builders, and the community on statutory and technical matters
- Manage, mentor, and support team members to promote collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Participate in after-hours on-call duties on a rostered basis
- Represent Council in a professional manner, building strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders
Your Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in building surveying (or equivalent) with extensive experience as a practising Building Surveyor
- Registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Surveyor with the Victorian Building Authority
- Demonstrated experience in leading, mentoring, and supervising staff
- Strong understanding of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Australian Standards, and related legislation
- Proven capacity for problem-solving, decision-making, and innovation in developing effective processes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance
