About the university
Since its inception in 1989, Notre Dame has become a leader in higher education and now has over 12,000 students enrolled across its three main campuses in Broome, Fremantle, and Sydney. Notre Dame is an Australian University which embraces both the modern Australian university tradition and the ancient and esteemed traditions of Catholic universities both in Europe and North America.
About the office
Majarlin Kimberley Centre for Remote Health (Majarlin) is a Commonwealth-funded University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) based on the University of Notre Dame’s Broome campus. Majarlin’s aim is to contribute to the development of a capable and culturally responsive Kimberley health workforce through inspiration, education, innovation, and research. To achieve this, Majarlin facilitates the delivery of high-quality Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health clinical education and professional support. Majarlin also engages in collaborative research to progress the rural health evidence base.
About the role
Majarlin seeks expressions of interest from registered Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health professionals who have a passion for teaching. Part of Majarlin’s core business is the provision, and facilitation of clinical supervision/facilitation for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health students undertaking formal practicums in the Kimberley. Majarlin facilitates over 250 student placements per year across the Kimberley, and these students come from a multitude of Universities across Australia. Majarlin provides a variety of support structures for students undertaking placements in the Kimberley, and for clinical facilities where these students are placed. As our program grows, we require additional supervisors from all Allied Health backgrounds, and facilitators from Nursing and Midwifery to assist our team in providing clinical support for our students. This role is suitable for any clinician that has an interest in clinical education, wishes to contribute to growing the next generation of the Kimberley health workforce, and for whom sessional or casual work suits their personal circumstances. This is also a role that may be of interest to clinicians interested in considering an academic career as an opportunity to gain experience in tertiary education. Whilst the role is sessional, you will be supported by senior Majarlin staff and have access to the University’s academic resources to support your work.
Key Responsibilities
Given the varying duties required by our sessional staff, the below duties are comprehensive and reflect the nature of possible work. Specific duties will be established based on the nature of the sessional work required by Majarlin and will include some, but not all of these duties, as determined by the hiring manager.
- General: Incorporate, advocate and demonstrate culturally sensitive healthcare practices.
- Supervision: Supervise students effectively with a student-centred approach that facilitates active learning and supports students from diverse backgrounds.
- Supervision: Provide academic counselling, mentoring and advice to students related to their clinical placement.
- Supervision: Collaborate with other staff, including Clinical Education staff at Majarlin, Majarlin Leadership and relevant stakeholders from external clinical facilities and universities.
- Teaching: Supervise/facilitate/support students undertaking Majarlin practicums in accordance with Majarlin, University and Facility requirements including the completion of midway and final summative assessments.
- Teaching: Incorporate scholarship and professional expertise into teaching practices, ensuring that teaching is informed by relevant research in the field.
- Teaching: Contribute to the development of engaging, relevant and technology-enhanced supervision/facilitation models.
- Research: Contribute to collaborative projects relevant to discipline-based teaching practices.
- Research: Contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning and/or professional practice in the discipline.
- Research: Support the broader research activities of Majarlin and actively contribute to collaborative and/or discipline-focused research projects.
- Community, Advocacy & Partnerships: Demonstrate a commitment to building strategic networks and collaborative relationships within industry, academic and community settings.
- Community, Advocacy & Partnerships: Actively raise the profile of the discipline within the University and the external community.
- Community, Advocacy & Partnerships: Demonstrate commitment to community engagement.
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Relevant qualifications and/or experience recognised by the institution as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
- Experience in teaching and/or research within a university or teaching environment will be highly regarded.
- Desirable: Evidence of progress towards advanced clinical (e.g., Clinical Masters) and/or academic qualifications (i.e. Masters by Research or PhD), or interest in doing so.
