The Sexual Health and BBV Program Officer (Youth) (50D) coordinates and facilitates culturally appropriate education and health promotion to Aboriginal communities, to increase health literacy and knowledge of STI and BBV prevention, and testing and treatment, with a primary focus on Aboriginal Youth.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop and implement strategies which enhance quality improvement interventions to reduce STIs and BBVs;
- Develop, coordinate and deliver a co-designed community education program including the development of associated resources;
- Promote and support existing and planned clinical management of STIs and BBVs, as well as maternal and reproductive health;
- Develop networks in Aboriginal communities to build community support for sexual health promotion activities;
- Work with Aboriginal primary health care services and their constituent Aboriginal communities to develop and implement peer education programs;
- Train local young Aboriginal people and other people who work with young Aboriginal people to become peer educators; and
- Implement strategies related to the target group, such as community based workers, the AHCWA Youth Committee, Youth Peer Educators, and Aboriginal community members.
About You
Aboriginality is an essential criterion and is provided for under Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA).
To be considered for this position, you must have:
- Knowledge, skills and experience within community or public health, with a focus on sexual health and BBVs;
- Possess a current WA Working with Children Card;
- Experience in providing education with a strong understanding of youth engagement strategies, ideally within the health sector;
- Understanding of the current issues that impact on young people in urban, regional and remote communities;
- Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills; and
- Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Ideally, in addition to the above, we are looking for someone who:
- Possesses a relevant health qualification;
- Has demonstrated experience in Aboriginal Community Controlled sectors; and
- Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating public health programs, education and training for a diverse range of audiences.
The position involves working within a multicultural organisation where the majority of employees, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require an unrestricted WA “C” Class Driver’s Licence, and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) prior to appointment.
