Payroll Manager
We're partnering with a well-known financial service organisation undergoing significant transformation to find a Payroll Manager who can confidently bring structure, governance, and discipline to their ANZ payroll operations. With a workforce of 1,000 across Australia and New Zealand, and payroll outsourced via a vendor model, the business needs someone who can balance operational ownership with strategic oversight — and isn't afraid to get into the detail.
THE ROLE
Reporting into the Head of Remuneration and Payroll and operating within an agile team model, this role will act as the go-to payroll expert within the function. There are no direct reports, but you'll partner closely with one other payroll team member and play a key role in supporting team development and knowledge uplift.
- Workforce: 1,000 employees (300 NZ)
- Payroll frequency: Weekly
- System: Workday
- Model: Fully outsourced payroll; vendor management is critical
- Current landscape: Complex environment with system ambiguity — not for the faint-hearted
- Focus: BAU delivery, lifting operational rigour, and driving continuous improvement (not projects)
THE CANDIDATE
We're searching for that rare blend — someone who can own the day-to-day payroll delivery, while also stepping back to drive process discipline and structure. You'll need to be comfortable navigating ambiguity, adept at managing vendors, and thrive in fast-paced, detail-oriented environments.
Ideal candidates will bring:
- Deep payroll expertise across both Australian and New Zealand jurisdictions
- Experience in well-run, high-performing payroll functions — you know what "good" looks like
- A mindset of ownership and accountability – someone who can confidently say, "I've got this"
- Ability to build structure, streamline processes, and improve control
- A hands-on, agile working style – collaborative, flexible, and unflustered by change
This is a brilliant opportunity to take the reins of a function that needs a steady, capable hand and a strategic mindset. If you're ready to step into a visible, high-impact role where your expertise will shape the future state of payroll, we'd love to hear from you.
