Overview

Sydney, Australia: Digital News Editor - SBS. Location: Sydney, Australia. We’re looking for an experienced and driven Digital News Editor to lead and drive our news coverage on the SBS News website and app, and Apple News.

This is an exciting role for someone looking to make a difference in the world of online journalism. You’ll be responsible for steering the daily news agenda of SBS News’ written content, working with senior editors and guiding journalists to deliver news that is accurate, timely, impactful, and deeply aligned with SBS’s Charter.

Responsibilities

- Commission and guide daily news articles, explainers and news-adjacent features.
- Take the lead on breaking news operations for articles, live blogs and alerts.
- Oversee forward planning for news coverage.
- Bring originality and creativity to daily coverage, grounded in editorial excellence, empathetic team leadership, audience insight and collaboration.
- Work with Video, Social, Audio and TV news teams as well as NITV and in-language teams to leverage SBS’s broader newsgathering for online stories.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of SBS News' publishing strategy, using data and trends to shape daily decisions and future improvements.
- Be a people-first leader, creating an inclusive and supportive team culture and driving innovation in storytelling and digital publishing formats.
- Serve as a senior editorial touchpoint and provide upward editorial referral to digital news teams in the absence of the Managing Editor (Digital), deputising to the Managing Editor at times.
- Shape the future of SBS News' digital offering and mentor a team of journalists delivering news for a diverse national audience.

Qualifications

- Experience in leading online journalism and editorial decision-making for a digital news operation.
- Ability to guide journalists to produce accurate, timely and impactful news content aligned with the Charter.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams across video, social, audio, TV news, and in-language strands.
- Strong data-informed approach to publishing strategy and daily decision-making.
- Demonstrated leadership with a people-first approach and commitment to an inclusive team culture.
