Overview

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria. Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.

Position Summary

The Anatomical Pathology Unit is located at The New Footscray Hospital campus. The Unit comprises Histopathology and Cytopathology. The Unit processes and reports a broad range of diagnostic specimens. The role requires the incumbent to work primarily in the Histopathology and Cytology section applying a broad range of histological and Cytological techniques at the New Footscray Hospital Laboratory and frozen sections at the Sunshine Laboratory. This position will require rotations to the Prahran laboratory, especially for training and continuous professional development purposes. The role will require participation in a rotating roster, Monday to Friday between the hours of 06:30 to 18:00 hours.

About You

Qualifications Required:

- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine with a major in Histopathology (or recognised equivalent) is required. A Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) from an Australian or New Zealand University is preferred.

Experience and Skills Required:

- At least 2 years’ post-graduation experience in one or more aspects of diagnostic histopathological techniques such as tissue handling, specimen registration, histological processing, specimen cutup, tissue embedding, microtomy, histological staining techniques.
- Demonstrated verbal, written communication and organisational skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
