Overview

Role and Location

Position: Permanent - Full Time at 80 hrs per f/n (with Monthly ADOs). Location: New Footscray Hospital. Salary: Medical Scientists Grade 3 (RY9-RZ3): $108,820.40-$123,905.60 + Superannuation. Staff Benefits: Leave Entitlements, Salary Packaging, Novated Leasing.

About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.

Position Summary

The Scientist in this position will be responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the Anatomical Pathology and Cytology departments at New Footscray Hospital (NFH). This includes performance of all pathology tests provided by the Unit at those sites, staff training, evaluation and introduction of new tests, equipment maintenance, quality assurance, updating of laboratory manuals, and administrative duties. Following training, and under the supervision of the Principal Scientist Anatomical Pathology at Prahran, the incumbent will oversee the Anatomical Pathology laboratory at NFH.

About You

Qualifications Required:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent.
- Higher qualifications such as M.Sc., or graduate membership or fellowship of any relevant professional body e.g. AIMS or AACB.

Experience and Skills Required:

- At least 8 years’ experience in working in Anatomical Pathology and Cytology.
- Demonstrate in-depth expertise working in an Anatomical Pathology laboratory.
- Demonstrated organisational and leadership skills.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
- Previous leadership role in an Anatomical Pathology laboratory is highly desirable.
