About this role
Care for an incredible range of animals and habitats and play a key role in bringing our live exhibits to life.
ABOUT MUSEUM VICTORIA:
Ever dreamed of working in a place where dinosaurs roam, stars explode, and the world's most intriguing stories come to life? Welcome to Museums Victoria (MV)—where every day is a new opportunity to create unforgettable experiences. Museums Victoria (MV) is one of the southern hemisphere's largest and most iconic museum organisations, we're not just about exhibits; we're about engaging, immersive moments that spark curiosity, creativity, and connection.
Home to the awe-inspiring Melbourne Museum, the culturally rich Immigration Museum, the mind-expanding Scienceworks, and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, MV is a place where events transform spaces and stories into something truly unmissable.
If you're passionate about caring for creatures that crawl, slither, fly, and fascinate, this role puts you right at the heart of it. As anAssistant Keeper, Live Exhibit, your primary focus will be the daily husbandry and care of our diverse living collection — from insects, arachnids, and reptiles to birds and other animals — ensuring they thrive in healthy, well-maintained environments. You'll also tend to planted displays, creating habitats that are as enriching as they are eye-catching.
Your days will involve hands-on animal care, monitoring health and behaviour, preparing diets, cleaning enclosures, and keeping meticulous records. While your main stage is behind the scenes, there will be times when you step into the spotlight — assisting with occasional public presentations and programs that give visitors a closer look at our live exhibits.
This role is perfect for someone who's meticulous, curious, and committed to the welfare of the animals in their care, and who takes pride in ensuring every display — whether insect, reptile, bird, or plant — is of the highest standard for our visitors.
Some of the key duties include:
- Undertake daily animal husbandry and plant maintenance duties as directed to ensure the health and quality display of all live exhibits.
- Collect husbandry data and communicate pertinent information with other live exhibits staff verbally and through written records, lab diary, labels and email.
- In association with other staff, assist in delivering public programs involving live animals and exhibits.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of exhibitions and programmes involving live animals.
- Comply with Museums Victoria's policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations
OTHER INFORMATION
To be considered applicants must have flexible availability across weekdays, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
Please note:Applications that do not address the Key Selection Criteria will not be considered.
