Overview
The key duties of the position include the Project Manager role with a high degree of independence and leadership. There are multiple roles available in this branch and a merit pool will be established for this recruitment process.
The Role
The Project Manager role exercises sound decision-making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. They have in-depth knowledge of the Project Management function and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function. They engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that affect strategic, political or operational outcomes for Defence.
The Project Manager will plan, lead and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes. They will manage a team, develop and implement work plans, set performance indicators, and review individual, team and business performance.
One EL 1 Project Manager role will lead the Business Transformation transition function within the Business Transformation team of the Defence Secret Environment Delivery Branch. This role will be accountable for leading and managing the transition of business processes, systems and organisational structures in a programmatic approach and align organisational changes across projects and the program. It requires the development and implementation of transformation goals, execution of transition plans, and oversight of the implementation and adoption of the Defence Digital Group new ways of working. The role will lead the development and delivery of organisational change strategies and adoption of new processes to achieve business outcomes, with forward planning and experience in communications.
One EL 1 Project Manager role will also require you to lead a team that delivers outcomes for the Defence Secret Networks team within the Defence Secret Environment Delivery Branch. This role will be accountable for specific project outcomes for this team and will consider the broader Defence Secret Environment (DSE) Program requirements.
This role requires strong internal and external stakeholder engagement and will be accountable for delivering a comprehensive document suite, including oversight of review, development, and end-to-end ownership of all related materials. Strong vendor management and commercial acumen are essential. It is expected that the role requires an in-depth understanding of Export and ITAR.
Both roles require a demonstrated understanding of the One Defence principles and the ability to apply them to foster collaboration, shared accountability, and enterprise-focused outcomes across diverse stakeholders. The DSED is part of the Military Systems Division in the Defence Digital Group (DDG). DSED supports the end-to-end uplift of the Defence Secret Environment, delivered through a major program of works. Its delivery will be the most significant uplift to the Defence Secret Environments ICT Capability, ensuring Defence is ready to fight and win in the digital age. Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this role will be a delivery-focused project management professional with demonstrated experience in leading complex projects through to closure. The candidate is expected to establish effective governance arrangements, maintain project schedules, manage scope, identify and mitigate risks and issues, and oversee financials to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and value-for-money outcomes. Success requires a strategic mindset, sound judgement and the ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments. The successful applicant will manage interdependencies, coordinate multiple stakeholders and provide clear, outcome-driven leadership across project teams. In addition to technical expertise, the role requires strong communication and influencing skills, a commitment to capability uplift and continuous improvement. This individual should contribute to a culture of accountability, knowledge sharing and high performance, and be recognised as a future leader who can support immediate project success and longer-term organisational goals.
Highly desirable:
- Qualifications in IT, Project Management, Cyber and STEM
- Knowledge/certifications: P3O, SAFe, PMP, PMI-PMBOK, Prince2, SixSigma
