The National Library of Australia invites applications from dedicated and suitably qualified persons for appointment as the Director-General for a term of up to five years. The Director-General is the statutory head of the National Library of Australia, a Corporate Commonwealth Entity established under the National Library Act 1960. The Director-General provides high-level leadership and vision to the Library and is a member of the Library Council, the Accountable Authority of the institution.

The National Library is Australia’s largest library, with a collection valued at over $1 billion and a highly engaged workforce of more than 400 staff. It serves nearly 400,000 physical visitors and 20 million digital visitors annually, and leads the nation in providing access to and preservation of Australia’s documentary heritage, including through its world-leading Trove service. The Library also provides leadership across the collecting sector, partnering with some 900 libraries, archives, museums and historical societies across Australia.

The key duties of the position include:

The successful candidate will be a respected and visionary leader with:

- proven ability to set strategic direction, articulate an ambitious vision, and inspire high performance in a complex organisation
- strong people and financial management skills, ensuring efficient, effective and ethical use of resources
- experience leading large and complex operations
- demonstrated understanding of the cultural sector, particularly libraries and other collecting institutions, and the ability to direct operations at significant scale
- excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the capacity to represent the Library nationally and internationally, and cultivate productive relationships across government, cultural and research sectors
- excellent communication skills, including the ability to advocate for the Library and its services to diverse audiences
- high standards of judgement, integrity and probity, and commitment to the APS reform agenda.

Eligibility

The Director-General is appointed by the Governor-General, generally for a term of up to five years. The role is established by the Remuneration Tribunal as a Principal Executive Officer C, with a competitive salary and generous superannuation package. The position is based in Canberra, and the successful candidate will be required to hold, or be able to obtain, an NV2 security clearance. This role is only open to Australian citizens at the time of applying.
