Position: Grade 2 Scientist

Position type: Full-time (Evening shift)

Melbourne Pathology is one of Victoria’s largest diagnostic pathology laboratories, committed to providing high quality healthcare throughout metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Grade 2 Scientist to lead our evening operations in the Microbiology Department. As the Evening Supervisor, you will oversee the evening team, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality microbiological testing in compliance with laboratory protocols and regulatory standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong technical expertise and leadership skills who thrives in a dynamic, high-throughput laboratory environment.

Position requirements:

- Supervise and co-ordinate a large team of laboratory assistants and scientists
- Ensure all tests are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures and accreditation standards (e.g. NATA, ISO or equivalent)
- Monitor workflow to ensure timely turnaround of results
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior staff
- Perform and validate a range of microbiological tests
- Responsible for maintenance and effective operation of multiple laboratory instruments and ensuring documentation is completed to required standards
- Escalate issues and report evening shift outcomes to senior scientists or management
- Responsible for staff training, competency assessments and ongoing education
- Excellent organisational skills, time management and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities under pressure
- Foster a culture of safety, quality and continuous improvement.

Qualifications and experience:

- An AIMS accredited Bachelor’s degree Majoring in Medical Microbiology/Medical Laboratory Science
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory
- Prior supervisory or shift coordination experience (preferred)
- Proficiency with LIS systems and general computer skills
- Familiarity with quality systems and regulatory standards in microbiology.
