Would you like to work in a busy Finance office supporting a world leading Research and Development department at Cambridge University Hospitals?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an organised and motivated individual to join the Finance Team at CUH. Reporting to the Senior Management Accountant, you will be providing financial reporting and transactional support to them as well as looking after your own range of R&D cost centres.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include monitoring the financial performance of a range of cost Centres liaising with budget holders and managing relationships with a number of stakeholders within the Trust's R&D community.
This post is a challenging and creative role where the ability to communicate well with colleagues across the Trust is important. A flexible approach and a can-do attitude are crucial. You will be self‑motivated, able to prioritise your own work and work to deadlines. You will have experience using Microsoft packages (i.e. Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.) with proven ability to analyse complex data and transform it into meaningful reports. You will demonstrate confidence, analytical ability and a flexible approach to the demands of the job.
Main duties of the job
The key focus of this post will be the production of budget reports from the ledger, investigation of variances and implementing any adjustments required to income and expenditure forecasts and budgets. Any changes required to budgets, covering both staff and expenditure, will be made by the Divisional Management Accountant. Data defects and any core process changes will be expected to be driven and managed by this role.
The Assistant Management Accountant will hold regular reviews with their peers and specialist colleagues to support intelligence gathering and resolving queries. This will include the provision of information, analysis and support in interpreting their reports and collation of information to assist in the development of robust forecasts.
The key skills required are those for interpreting, processing and analysing data using Microsoft Office, interrogating all the various sub‑systems of the ledger and requires a proven working knowledge of the accounting principles involved. You must hold an excellent and proven working knowledge of Excel.
The Assistant Management Accountant is expected to take an active interest in the development of their skills, experience and career.
You must be able to work on your own initiative and be able to manage your own priorities as set by the Management of their area.

Job responsibilities
This unique role also has the opportunity to progress from a Band 4 Assistant Management Accountant to a Band 5 Management Accountant following the completion of on‑the‑job training criteria. The training criteria will be something which you are able to work towards with your line manager as part of your regular 1:1s and will form part of your CPD development.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Educated to A level or NVQ Level 3
- GCSE or equivalent in Higher Level Mathematics and English
- ECDL qualification or equivalent experience – able to set up spreadsheets and documents
- Educated to Degree level
- Educated to Association of Accounting Technicians Intermediate Level or have equivalent experience
Experience
- MS Office – preparing reports in Word and using Excel for data; being able to use different formulae
- Planning and prioritising your time to balance different demands and deadlines
- Experience of working in an accounting department in a management accountant role within a large organisation
Knowledge
- Understand the use and explain the purpose of accounting accruals and provisions
- Self‑motivated with a proactive approach to problem solving
- Prepared to contribute to how the department operates
Skills
- An ability to listen to budget holders, senior managers and to respond to questions or requests for information in a way which non‑financial staff will understand and can interpret
- Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both non‑finance and finance staff
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels within the organisation
- Able to carry out work with the required attention to detail in a busy financial management department
- Able to concentrate and focus on a range of issues particularly during the monthly reporting cycle
- Able to prioritise own workload
