The Department
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet supports the Premier as head of the Western Australian Government. The Department is a central agency that leads the public sector in providing advice and support to the Premier and Cabinet in their service of the Western Australian Community. We foster a workplace culture based on our core values, Leadership, Connection and Impact. For more information about the Department, please visit our website.
The Intergovernmental Relations Unit
The Intergovernmental Relations Unit plays a key role in how WA connects, collaborates and negotiates with the rest of the country. Our team makes sure WA is ready for the big conversations – from supporting the Premier at National Cabinet, to coordinating across agencies and working with other states and territories to keep WA’s interests front and centre.
The opportunity
We’re looking for someone who can bring sharp policy thinking, strategic nous and a steady hand under pressure to help shape WA’s position on the national stage – because every decision has real impact for services and communities across WA.
The national conversation moves fast but right now the key priorities for this role include:
- Supporting the negotiation of the new five-year National Health Reform Agreement.
- Working cross government on the design and negotiation of Thriving Kids in Western Australia as part of national reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
As a Principal Policy Officer, you’ll
- Help shape advice and briefing material for national and intergovernmental forums.
- Support collaboration across WA Government agencies so we speak with one clear voice.
- Support negotiation of funding agreements with the Commonwealth and national reporting.
- Build relationships with your counterparts across the country (and know who to call when issues pop up).
About you
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring;
- An eye for the bigger political picture and how WA fits into the national landscape.
- The smarts to cut through data and turn it into clever, evidence-based policy.
- Comfort working in the grey – you know how to find direction in complexity.
- Sound judgement and integrity, you’ll back your advice and challenge when it counts.
- Strong networking skills, you can build and maintain relationships at senior levels.
- The ability to get your message across with clarity and impact.
- A collaborative spirit that helps lift the whole team.
For further job-related information
For further information, please refer to the attached Job Description Form (JDF) or contact Chantelle Horsford, Manager, Intergovernmental Relations, on 040 967 2644 (not to be contacted for assistance with lodging your application).

Send in:
- Your CV; and
- A short statement (max 2 pages) that explains the skills and value you would bring to the role and our team, making sure to clearly demonstrate your capability in the context of the role’s requirements.
Equity and Diversity
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet is committed to improving employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As a measure to achieve equality and support, section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) will apply to this position. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.
Suitable applicants will be required to provide
- Proof of identity 100-point check.
- A satisfactory National Police Certificate issued by the Western Australian Police Force that is less than two months from the date of issue.
