Katoomba High School is a large centre for secondary education located in the Upper Blue Mountains. The student body has almost doubled in number over the last ten years, affirming the comprehensive nature of the school. The school hosts a large Inclusive Education Faculty with ten classes catering for students with learning, physical and behavioural disabilities, as well as autism and anxiety.
Position Information
Katoomba High School rests on the lands of the Darug and Gundungurra people whose elders provide a strong connection between the school and the original owners. Alliances and partnerships that supplement and complement the work of the school include: local Blue Mountains Ngara Wingarru Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST), Headspace, Women's Health Centre, TAFE, Scenic World and other local businesses, the Upper Blue Mountains Learning Community (a coalition of public schools working together to benefit the work of all members) and various cultural and artistic organisations.
Specific Selection Criteria
- Approval to teach Special Education and/or demonstrated experience teaching secondary students with complex behaviour needs, particularly within a mixed Mainstream/ Support Unit setting. Experience working with students with Autism, Moderate Intellectual Disability and other complex needs is highly desirable.
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills, coupled with effective wellbeing practices. Proven ability to utilise data to plan and deliver individualised support for student wellbeing and learning programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, proactively and professionally with colleagues, parents and carers. Experience liaising with external support agencies to provide comprehensive support for students with diverse needs, including Aboriginal students.
