Overview
Montefiore – an award‑winning, Sydney‑based aged care provider with a proud 135‑year history as a non‑profit organisation founded on Jewish values – is seeking a compassionate and skilled Dementia Consultant to join our well‑resourced, multi‑disciplinary Dementia Services Team. This is a permanent part‑time, 16‑hour week (preferably over three days) role focused on implementing and sustaining an effective dementia strategy that supports residents, their families and the care staff.
Responsibilities
- Implement and sustain a person‑centred dementia strategy to promote meaningful engagement, wellbeing and quality of life for residents living with cognitive change.
- Provide direct support to residents, families and staff, including education, training and clinical input.
- Apply best practice dementia care, including behaviour management, restrictive practice review and non‑restrictive strategies that uphold residents’ dignity and rights.
- Advise on advance care planning, substitute decision‑making, and relevant policy and legislation.
- Collaborate with external community and healthcare services and agencies to optimise client, carer and staff wellbeing.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of differential diagnosis, comorbidities, and psychosocial factors influencing dementia.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered nurse or allied health professional with specialist skills and passion for dementia care.
- Extensive knowledge of dementia (diagnosis and exacerbating factors) and of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
- No less than 4 years of experience in an inpatient or aged care setting treating BPSD and other mental health conditions in people aged 65 years and older.
- Comprehensive understanding of restrictive practices, least‑restrictive and person‑centred approaches, and the ability to support teams in implementing proactive strategies.
- Excellent skills in supporting dignity‑of‑risk and harm‑reduction strategies.
- Understanding of advance care planning, substitute decision‑making, and relevant policy and legislation.
- Sound knowledge of trauma‑informed and culturally responsive care for diverse client groups.
- Skillful facilitation of education for best practice dementia care using varied training modes.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and computer literacy skills.
- Ability to demonstrate understanding of the Jewish community and culture.
