The Launceston General Hospital is seeking an Orthopaedic Surgical Fellow to undertake approved surgical outpatient and inpatient services, day to day management of patients, participate in Registrars Rosters, provide leadership and mentoring and be involved in research projects.

The Role:

The successful Launceston General Hospital (LGH) Fellowship applicant will receive expert tuition in total hip replacement (anterior and posterior approach), revision hip replacement, hip arthroscopy, total knee replacement (including computer assisted surgery and robotic surgery), revision knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, reconstructive surgery of the knee, knee osteotomy and general orthopaedic trauma.

There will be supervised surgery at the LGH and Private assisting at St Lukes Hospital Calvary. The LGH has trauma and arthroplasty lists which are supervised by a VMO where the successful candidate will gain operative experience.

In conjunction with their supervisor, they will establish and then participate in suitable consultations established through discussions around areas of interest and a roster created based on individual fellow’s needs.

- While on the LGH Fellowship, the Fellow will attend clinics and x-ray meetings (weekly).
- The Fellow will assist in educating AOA set trainees, unaccredited orthopaedic registrars and medical students on rotation at the LGH.
- It is expected that the Fellow attend AOA scientific meetings and AOA continuing education meetings specific to hip, knee and trauma orthopaedic surgery.
- It is expected that the Fellow attend and participate in quarterly audits at the LGH. There is a weekly meeting reviewing all cases completed to provide peer review.
- Attendance at monthly journal clubs.
- It is expected that the successful applicant continues to progress their Orthopaedic knowledge via the many self-directed forums currently available.
- It is expected that the Fellow be involved in research projects in the orthopaedic department. There are a number of projects ongoing at any one time. There are links with the Clifford Craig Medical trust and the University of Tasmania.
- The successful candidate will participate in the on call registrar roster (1:6).
- We would expect the appointed Fellow to fulfill the criteria of Senior Career Medical Officer.

This position has been established to fulfil a number of targeted activities to improve the delivery of general surgical services to patients at the Launceston General Hospital, Northern Region and to assist in the coordination and training of Surgical Registrars and Resident Medical Officers (RMOs).

Details of appointment:

Fixed term, full time, day worker (with on-call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 1 February 2027 until 6 February 2028.

Senior Career Medical Officer Level 1-3 $187,460 - $206,000 per annum, pro rata+ 12% superannuation+ access to salary packaging

- Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Please note that access to the Senior Career Medical Officer salary range $187,460 - $206,000 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Career Medical officer and application approved as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

- General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

- Recently gained Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or completion of training for FRACS and waiting to be awarded Fellowship.
