LET’S EXPLORE THE JOB
This cadetship is a four-year program designed to support you in completing a Bachelor of Science degree, with a focus on Environmental Health, Environmental Management, or a related discipline. As a Cadet Environmental Health Officer (EHO), you will gain technical knowledge, develop valuable skills, and receive hands-on experience in delivering council services that address environmental factors impacting public health.
You will be supported to participate in annual inspection programs aligned with environmental and public health legislation, using a risk-based assessment framework to ensure community safety. You’ll also contribute to fostering a collaborative team environment and delivering high-quality services to the public. Training will be provided both on-the-job and through your university studies, either on campus or online.
In this role, we will support you to:
- Undertake monitoring programs, analyse data, undertake or arrange sample testing and make recommendations relating to the outcomes of same.
- Investigate pollution incidents, public health and environmental matters, gather evidence and all relevant information and recommend appropriate action in accordance with Councils statutory obligations.
- Investigate and resolve where possible customer complaints with all relevant legislation and Council approved policies.
- Provide technical advice to internal and external customers and apply the relevant provisions of the legislation covering environmental and public health issues as they relate to the operations of Council.
- Assist in the processing of development application referrals that relate to environmental and public health issues including food premises, acoustic issues, contamination, air and water pollution, wastewater disposal, sewerage treatment systems, cooling towers, swimming pools and skin penetration.
The position is located at LMCC Works Depot and involves travel to multiple areas within Lake Macquarie.
Applicants who hold a Bachelor of Science degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, may not be eligible to apply.
- Have completed first year (8 Courses) of a tertiary degree in Environmental Health, Environment Science, Environmental Management, etc.)
- Commitment to completing all training course requirements including workshop residentials.
- Proven ability to understand written communication and prepare simple forms of written communication to a professional standard
- Enjoy working in a team
- Have a good attention to detail and experience with software such as Microsoft 365
- Hold a minimum of Provisional Drivers Licence.

- Receive a wage whilst studying towards a qualification starting from $1,057.60 per week plus 12 per cent superannuation
- Payment of university fees (including course and amenities fees) for the remainder of your related undergraduate studies
