Service Profile

The WA Record of Intensive Care (WARIC), an Intensive Care (ICU) Electronic Medical Record (EMR), is a contemporary digital solution for ICU departments across Western Australia (WA). WARIC is currently in use at Fiona Stanley and Royal Perth Hospitals, improving clinical practice through clinical decision support tools which actively assist clinicians in determining optimal treatments for consumers. It serves as a single application for a range of clinical functions, including:

- integration of data from biomedical electronic devices into observation records
- multidisciplinary clinical notes
- medication and infusions management
- laboratory and microbiology reports
- as well as supporting research and quality improvement

A project is underway to expand WARIC to Sir Charles Gairdner and Perth Children’s Hospitals, with potential for future sites to be added. The expansion is supported by the Health Technology Management Unit, who are responsible for technical management of the system across all sites. The first stage expansion is expected to be completed in December 2026, with the project and positions transitioning to operational service delivery.

Position Profile

The Senior Biomedical Engineer – Clinical Engineering plays a pivotal leadership role in managing and supporting the technical and clinical aspects of the ICU EMR system across multiple hospital sites. This includes overseeing system configuration, software changes, and ensuring alignment with WA Health. The role involves strategic planning, risk assessment, and coordination of change management, upgrades, testing, and training activities. It also requires collaboration with biomedical engineering and ICT teams to maintain secure and effective medical equipment networks and providing high-level consultancy and technical support to clinical and biomedical engineering teams.

In addition to technical leadership, the role encompasses clinical engineering responsibilities such as lifecycle management of biomedical systems, preparation of business cases and tender documentation, and participation in EMR-related projects. The Senior Biomedical Engineer ensures consistent quality standards, supports safe patient care, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives. The position requires expert knowledge in biomedical systems, strong communication and problem-solving skills, and a commitment to governance, safety, and compliance with health service policies and national standards.

Eligibility to Apply

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed-term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments).

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

- Tertiary qualification in engineering and eligible for membership of the Institute of Engineers Australia.
- Contemporary knowledge of the theory, design and practical application of digital electronics, clinical data management, computer systems and networking.
- Expert professional knowledge and skills related to the range of specialised biomedical equipment and systems, its design, operation and application.
- Demonstrated significant experience with, and knowledge of, integrated biomedical systems and applications, particularly the ICU EMR, and in the delivery of integrated enterprise applications in a large and complex service environment.
