The School for Student Leadership (Trading as The Alpine School) is an exciting and unique year‑nine specialist school operating for 24 years in regional Victoria. It has 4 campuses and a residential 24/7 operation that runs a highly developed curriculum, experiential education and a strong outdoor and adventure programme.
Roles and responsibilities specific to the setting
- The Principal is the instructional leader and direct line‑manager to all staff, often mobile between campuses.
- The campus principals, leading teachers, business manager and education support staff form the operational core.
- Staff work in a close, collaborative team environment; kitchen staff deliver a Common Kitchen model with healthy food for 45 teenagers and occasional community events.
- Operational responsibilities include budgeting, compliance, safety, and support for a 24/7 residential environment.
- Key duties involve coordination of catering, meal planning, staff training, student supervision in kitchen activities, and compliance with food safety and child‑safe standards.
Selection Criteria
- Excellent skills, knowledge, passion, experience or qualifications in delivering high quality catering and food service.
- Knowledge of safe kitchen operation and possession of Safe Food Supervisor qualifications.
- Strong ability to relate to young people and support the care and learning policies of The Alpine School.
- Awareness of Department of Education and Training guidelines for nutritious food in schools.
- Highly developed budget management and independent working capacity.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
Role

This position carries management responsibility, accountability for professional support services, and a degree of latitude in determining how targets and goals are achieved. It requires cooperation with other staff and adherence to school policy and procedures. The role is at range 3, with a mandatory qualification of no less than four years.
Responsibilities
- Provide lovingly prepared meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner, morning and afternoon tea) and food of uniformly high standard for 45 teenagers.
- Accommodate diverse dietary needs (religious, vegan, vegetarian, allergies, etc.).
- Order all food and provisions using the school order book and approved suppliers, including provisions for excursions and overnight camps.
- Collaborate with other campus catering teams to maximise variety, creativity, diversity and bulk purchasing.
- Prioritise local ingredients whenever possible.
- Encourage and facilitate student participation in food preparation and provision.
- Provide special meal services: hot, baked lunch on student arrival Sunday; lunch‑time lunch on Community Learning Project presentation day; cooked breakfast per rotation; snacks for morning tea and excursions; staff meals on non‑student days.
- Prepare birthday cakes for students with birthdays in the term.
- Manage inventory: unpack, store, rotate stock, conduct stock takes, and place timely orders.
- Handle invoices, order forms and payments with the Office Manager.
- Ensure compliance with all local and state food handling regulations, staff training, kitchen registration and transportation requirements.
- Maintain the kitchen and dining area, supervise student assistants, monitor fridge and freezer temperatures, and manage cleaning supplies.
- Manage waste disposal, equipment maintenance and fault reporting.
- Conduct weekly meetings with the Head of Campus and attend daily staff morning meetings on campus.
- Perform additional tasks as required in consultation with the Principal or Head of Campus.
