Council of the City of Sydney, Australia The Sunrise Project Full time

About the organisation

Arafmi is the peak body for unpaid mental health carers in Queensland. Arafmi provides free services for mental health carers in Queensland, and advocates for systemic reforms. They have over 45 years' experience and are passionate about making a difference to the lives of people and their families and carers.

The Carer Support Team provides a dedicated support service to mental health carers across Queensland. This consists of 24/7 telephone support, one-to-one coaching, support groups, a carer education program, events, respite, stakeholder engagement and participation and engagement with Carer Gateway programs.

About the role

In this rewarding and autonomous role, you’ll engage directly with mental health carers in your region, supporting their wellbeing, navigating services, and delivering tailored support through coaching, education sessions, and group facilitation.

You’ll be a key point of contact for new and existing carers in the program, completing registrations and needs assessments, helping them access funding and services, and building trusted relationships with local stakeholders and service providers.

This position is a maximum term contract position to 30 June 2026.

Responsibilities

- Establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with carers in a manner that preserves their dignity and privacy
- Conduct carer intakes, assessments, planning, and reviews
- Facilitate individual and group coaching sessions (in person and online)
- Coordinate regional education sessions and carer events
- Build strong, positive relationships and referral pathways in the region and internally with the Arafmi Carer Support Program
- Maintain accurate records and meet reporting requirements
- Work collaboratively with Arafmi’s broader carer support team and partners

To be successful, you will have

- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a similar support, case management, or community engagement role
- Lived experience as a carer for someone with mental ill-health and the ability to apply knowledge from these experiences in your work is desirable but not essential
- Thorough understanding of the caring role, trauma-informed practice, and best practice carer supports that enable carers to sustain their caring role and enhance their wellbeing
- Ability to build strong, respectful relationships that promote capacity and resilience through periods of complex challenges
- Strong facilitation skills and experience running group programs or workshops
- Exceptional organisational skills and the ability to work autonomously
- The ability to build trust, rapport, and partnerships within the community
- Previous experience providing Carer Gateway funded programs would be advantageous
- Formal qualifications are not essential for this role; however, the role will require a high level of skills and knowledge similar to those gained through formal study at a degree level

Essential Requirements

- Current driver’s licence and access to a comprehensively insured vehicle
- NDIS Worker Screening Card, Blue Card, and Police Check (or ability to obtain)
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and client record management systems
- Willingness to travel occasionally and work flexibly to meet carer needs

Lived experience as a carer for someone with mental ill-health is highly valued, but not required. Please note: You will never be asked to disclose the specifics of your lived experience.

Why Join Arafmi?

You’ll be part of a values-led organisation that prioritises staff wellbeing, autonomy, and connection. Arafmi offers a supportive team culture, flexible working arrangements, and an opportunity to truly impact carers’ lives across Queensland.
