About the role
As the Head of Cyber Defence, you’ll safeguard our business, people, and customers from evolving cyber risks by leading the strategy, development, and delivery of Origin’s Threat Defence and Response capability.
This pivotal role leads a highly capable Cyber Threat Management function, encompassing Security Operations, Data Loss Prevention, Threat and Adversary Simulations, and Cyber Incident Response. The function is distinguished by an integrated Threat Intelligence and Rapid Detection Engineering capability, enabling proactive identification and mitigation of emerging risks.
This role also partners closely with an industry‑leading DevOps engineering team and leverages a unique cyber defence technology stack – maximising reach, usability, and cost‑effectiveness to deliver robust, responsive protection aligned with business priorities and regulatory obligations.
- Represent Origin in engagements with government, regulatory, and industry bodies, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity obligations and influencing external cyber policy discussions.
- Oversee key vendor and MSSP relationships, ensuring SLAs and performance standards are met to deliver resilient cyber defence capabilities.
- Partner with senior leaders across the business to enhance security controls, incident readiness, and alignment of cyber initiatives with enterprise priorities.
- Lead the design and execution of Origin’s Cyber Threat Detection & Response framework, including SOC, SIEM, endpoint, email, and automation platforms.
- Maintain robust 24x7 security monitoring and incident response capabilities across IT and OT environments, minimising business impact from cyber threats.
- Direct cross‑functional cyber incident management and response exercises, ensuring compliance with SOCI and other regulatory obligations.
- Drive the development of cybersecurity policies, standards, and governance frameworks, embedding best practices across the organisation.
- Sponsor strategic cybersecurity uplift programs, fostering collaboration with industry peers and advancing Origin’s overall cyber resilience.
Skills & Requirements
You’ll be a hands‑on and strategic leader, having experience with collaborating closely with teams across IAM, Security Engineering, and wider Technology teams to strengthen security posture and drive continuous improvement.
- Extensive experience with cyber defence concepts and technologies, including SIEM, SOAR, EDR, NGFW, OT/ICS security.
- Strong understanding of applicable governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management frameworks such as AESCSF, SOC CMM, ISO27001.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex cyber defence / threat management concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams and external partners.
